Memorial

Below are the names of those who have died while homeless. May we remember them and give space for those who wish to honour their memory. If someone dies while homeless they will be included in the Online Homeless Memorial, regardless of the reasons for their death. If someone has been homeless in the past and their death is associated with their homelessness, they will also be included. Many names are listed as John, Jane, and J Doe’s due to privacy concerns for those who died within the shelter system. Not everyone has the opportunity for a grave or space to be remembered. We hope that this website will offer some space for mourning and remembrance.  This list is far from exhaustive. Unfortunately, we still do not track and take care of each person who dies while homeless, although steps have been taken to try to remedy that.

If you are a friend, or family member that would like to add comments, stories, memories, photos, or artwork for someone on this list who has died, please email us at torontohmn [at] gmail [dot] com

“Although it’s difficult today to see beyond the sorrow,
May looking back in memory help comfort you tomorrow”

The last 4 years, Bethanie was really ill with heart conditions and struggles with addiction.
Bethanie lived a simple life, very youthful in finding joy in little things in life.
I feel that her motto would be “Help others, even when you know that they can not help you back.
She would ask for people to help food banks, shelters and at the least , say Hi and Smile while on your way.
The family would ask to help Toronto Homeless Memorial Network if you are able.
We love and miss Bethanie

I met James (Jim) Kilmartin in Toronto, Ontario, where I had the privilege to be a volunteer teacher in a photography program. James’ friendly demeanor and enthusiasm for photography and videography was instantly apparent. James was a creative soul. Music was always close by, whether he was just tuning into songs or strumming them on his guitar. He was inspired by nature, constantly documenting its beauty in landscape and cityscape photographs and sharing them with others. He was also a kind soul. Moved by helping people, he recently expressed just how fulfilled he felt working in the harm reduction clinic at South Riverdale Community Centre. He naturally saw the good in others and perhaps that’s why he is loved and remembered fondly by so many. James was born in Dublin, Ireland. According to his Facebook page, he attended Thomas A. Blakelock High School and General Wolfe High School and studied Psychiatry at Toronto Metropolitan University. Thank you for offering this valuable space for friends and family to honour their loved ones. – Jodi, Friend

If he could he would do anything for anyone as long as he had the appropriate means to do so. He was my best friend and husband for 14 years on and off again, I can’t believe he isn’t here with me anymore. I can’t handle life without him. He was definitely a loving caring man and he was taken from Chloe and I way to soon”

“He was 34 years old the bravest man that I have ever known and if you stand beside a person they can move mountains. Not in front of them ,not behind them but right beside them with their hand in yours. He was not perfect but he was perfect for me. I miss him”

2021 – May 15 – Bridgett Garcia (click here to view Bridgett’s Obituary)

We will always remember Bridgett for being brave, courageous, and strong in spite of suffering a very complex and devastating illness that prevented her from achieving many of her dreams. In spite of that, Bridgett always tried to see the positive in the reduced landscape of her life. Bridgett leaves a huge emptiness in the hearts of all her family who loved her including her friends from Holy Cross Catholic School in Kingston and the University of Toronto.

Bridgett’s life was short indeed. Her early years were full of laughter, bright sunshine, and plenty of dreams, but then addiction took hold and desperation and anguish crept in, which then triggered three years living in shelters, City Parks and encampments. Bridgett’s passing is devastating, but we are grateful that she did not die alone on the streets or an alley, but in her room that she cherished so much at the Bond Place Shelter Hotel.  So much love and so many dreams lost, but we are at peace knowing that Bridgett has gone into the light and is finally resting.

Bridgett: we all love you and will sadly miss you, but you will always be in our hearts and minds. We pray for your eternal rest and hope that your next journey is a peaceful one and filled with happiness and sunshine. We are sure that every day you will be happily looking at your beautiful daughter Bianca as she grows.

Bridgett’s family is thankful to so many people and organizations that helped her during her struggles and made things easier for her and always treated her with dignity and respect. The Focus Team of Saint Michael’s Hospital, CAMH, the ALAB Clinic, The Strachan House, and last but not least the Church of the Holy Trinity for establishing the Toronto Homeless Memorial and for facilitating this website that offers some space for mourning and remembrance to honor the memories and lives of people like Bridgett.

Bridgett had a baby sister named Ashley Monique, who had just turned 34 years of age two days before she decided to end her life on July 29, 2022. The grief experienced by a parent from losing a child is hard to understand and accept, but to lose two children within a 14-month period is unbelievable and devastating. Bridgett and Ashley had a special love for one another, but their mental health struggles prevented them from realizing many of their dreams and for the last two years of Bridgett’s life they had drifted apart. The family’s hope and wish is that today, Bridgett and her baby sister Ashley are together again and enjoying of each other’s company in a beautiful place filled with sunshine and brightness where there is no pain, no sadness and no more tears.

Bridgett’s father has worked with CAMH to establish The Bridgett and Ashley Garcia Rainbow Fund. Although Bridgett and her baby sister Ashley lost their struggles and their ability to fulfill many of their dreams, their family wants to continue raising awareness and supporting CAMH whose research efforts and work provides people who suffer from mental health and addictions with the opportunity for a better life and a brighter future.  Why did we call it the “Rainbow Fund”?, because a rainbow signifies the promise of better times ahead, which aligns with CAMH’s mission to create a better future for anyone struggling with mental illness and addictions and discovering more effective ways to prevent suicide. 1 year ago today a legend of this great city was buried with his wife, my mother. This man worked very hard for decades in this city, putting in overtime week after week to support myself and him, taking care of me and working a busy schedule on his own. He worked in various restaurants, diners, pubs, etc. cooking up flavourful recipes made with his high standard for decades. I had the luxury of getting to enjoy his plates of pure comfort soul food for many years. Not only was he a culinary wizard, he was a historical expert. He knew so much about world history, especially our country and city. He would take me around downtown telling me all about the history of various churches, historical buildings, hotels that have been around for centuries like my work, etc. When he wasn’t teaching me about food, history, and other fun facts he knew, or working, he had a book in his hand. This man truly loved to read and educate himself with more knowledge and expanding his vocabulary. He wasn’t the most in shape person but I swear he would keep up with marathon cyclists. He never cared to drive even though he was great at it (I got to find out a few times, once in the cemetery when it was packed and he flew us out of there) he would always ride his bicycles around the city. You were also a lover of entertainment, You and my girlfriend have both watched like almost every movie I can think of. You were a bold, hard headed Aries that was so factual and enjoyable to converse with, and a soft hearted, kind and caring Pisces who cared about everyone around him and always made me feel so loved especially without mother around while growing up. You were my Father, Chef, Mentor, Teacher, and most importantly best friend. You would always call me just to check up on me, say hi, and tell me how proud I make you even when I felt like I wasn’t making anyone proud especially myself. Every time you would come over, you would bring over ingredients and cook us meals, every, single, time. I am forever grateful for that and all you did for me. I’ll forever carry on your legacy, with our love and passion of food and culinary, and our love of knowledge and education. I hope you and mom are together again, I think so. Thank you for everything Chef Craig Ogle. Best father a son could ask for.  See you on the other side but until then, I’ll keep on my path

“My nephew never asked to be sick, nor did he ever want to be, he was loved, he was loving, we cared and he cared for so many. He touched so many lives with his handsomeness, his generosity, his love for family, but as life went on, he slowly slipped away. We are fighting for an inquest into his death, we will not rest until they answer to what they’ve done”

(From Adam’s mother, Darlene)

Adam came into this world big, at nearly 11 pounds. He had his first surgery for hydrocephalus (water on the brain) at about 9 months of age, and had dozens of surgeries at Sick Kids over the years to deal with blockages in the surgical tubing that allowed the excess brain fluid to drain into his abdomen.

But he never let illness or pain get in the way of being the most generous human being I have ever known. He was always there for a friend in need, offering a place to stay when friends were put out of their home for some reason, coming to his mom the paralegal for advice when his friends were having landlord problems.

He also worked very hard to lose over 200 pounds a few years back, thanks to the generosity of the friend he was living with at the time who paid for the gym membership and personal trainer. We were all so very proud of him, and the picture of him standing inside one leg of his fat pants shows how proud he was of himself. Sadly thyroid issues resulted in his gaining it all back over the last few years. His passions included wrestling – we used to go to matches at Maple Leaf Gardens when he was a kid – and the Tasmanian Devil. His ashes are going in to a Tasmanian Devil cookie jar instead of a more conventional urn. And he enjoyed karaoke; our late best friend was one of the city’s first hosts.

In the end, it was a respiratory infection that resulted in Adam’s death, but the proximate cause was a social safety net that let him down.

A hospital that didn’t keep him until he stopped feeling suicidal, but kicked him out when a bed became available at a shelter. Shelter staff who told him he qualified for the Toronto Housing Allowance Program to help pay for a shitty bachelor apartment, when in fact he had NOT been in the shelter long enough to qualify. A case manager who insisted he stop living with me so he’d qualify for a rent supplement through the LHIN, but only if his was the sole name on the lease.

He never did get his own place again. He spent the last 9 1/2 miserable months in a succession of shelters. For some time he didn’t even have a place to plug in his CPAP machine! I suspect that failure to properly clean that machine might have been the original cause of the lung infection, but we’ll probably never know. I do know that he had developed arthritis, on top of the chronic pain in his head that had not been resolved by a shunt revision in 2016.

He was a very big man at over 500 pounds, trying to sleep on a single bed! And now the Auditor General is accusing ODSP clients of cheating the system. I would like to tell her to try finding a place to live for $497 a month! Nobody WANTS to be on ODSP!” I lost count of the number of times Adam called me in tears over the years because yet another prospective landlord refused to rent to him because he was an ODSP client. This situation is pandemic.

It’s a mixed blessing that ONE person we tried to rent from a few years ago put it in writing that they would rent only to people with full-time employment. According to Ontario’s Human Rights Code, this constitutes discrimination. We have a hearing pending at the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, and I am hopeful that we can set a strong legal precedent and strike a blow for every person who has been denied housing because they were on OW or ODSP.

The exhausted student and bereaved mother in me could easily just walk away from this HRTO thing, because the respondent is trying really hard to wear me down. They actually dug up a Facebook post of mine talking about grieving over my mother’s death; this post was from more than 18 months after she denied us housing and is completely irrelevant to her case!

But the advocate and social justice warrior in me simply cannot walk away from this. My late mother would never forgive me, nor my late first-born son. The system is broken, and while I can’t fix the system on my own or overnight, maybe I can get justice from ONE landlord for ONE family. Mine.

Father, Grandfather, Brother and Son
The early days were full of laughter and bright sunshine.
Then addiction took hold and desperation crept in.
So much love lost.
At last we have found you; at last you are at peace.
Many thanks to those at the Good Shepherd Ministries for the work they do for all of those forgotten souls.

(from Erin’s online Obit)

Erin James Staffel, 47 died suddenly on July 1, 2019, at St. Michaels Hospital in Toronto, Ontario.

Erin is survived by his children, Haley Grace Staffel (21), Declan James Staffel (15), and his ex-wife Emilee Holt all of Toronto, his Aunt Mary Staffel, and his father Edward James Staffel both of Santa Fe, New Mexico. He is preceded in death by his mother, Anna Marie Marchiando Staffel of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Erin was born on August 17, 1971, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1995 with a degree in Fine Arts. In 2004 he married Emilee and together they had two children, Haley and Declan. Erin’s compassion as a father was deep and seemingly endless. He shared his love of art with his children and showed them what it meant to live a life inspired by creativity. He was incredibly proud of his children and often spent evenings with Emilee fantasizing about what they would be like when they grew up.

In 2007, Erin moved the family to Toronto to continue his position as a Director of R&D at Feature Creep Technology, where he had worked since 2003. He found a way to connect with his new community through his interest in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and love of fixed gear cycling. He had a great appreciation of graffiti and tattoos, luckily both of which Toronto has an abundance.

It would be remiss to not acknowledge that Erin struggled with addiction the past few years and in the end, the addiction won. While nothing can replace the years that addiction took, it’s important to remember the years when Erin was a devoted, generous, caring person rich with wit, creativity, knowledge, and so full of heart and soul”

“Pops (Leon Alward) was a regular volunteer with the Toronto Overdose Prevention Society, when we opened our site at Moss Park. When we showed up in the park to open the site, Pops was living at Maxwell Meighan. Over the 11 months that we were in the park, he often stayed at the shelter or slept in the park and at one point was even living under the trailer. Regardless of his experience with homelessness, Pops always showed up for us, even when he wasn’t scheduled – he was always willing to help, even if his back was hurting. Without him, it is likely that Moss Park OPS would not have been so successful, Ontario’s first OPS. He knew that we had the ear of all levels of government, had tacit permission from the police and city and he was willing to help the cause however he could. He spoke to community members, health care providers, media, politicians and gave deputations at city hall – going out of his comfort zone to share his story with the goal of saving lives and improving the lives of people who use drugs. This is something we can all learn from. In adding Pops’ name to the memorial today, it’s important to remember how these crises – homelessness/housing and overdose – are linked. We know that there are measures all levels of government could implement today to stop people from dying. Rest in power Pops – we love you and miss you and we will keep fighting in your memory.”

2017 November 26 – Virginia Higgerson

Virginia Louise Higgerson (“Virg” to friends) was born August 17, 1963 in Toronto, and lived here until her death, from cancer, last November 26, 2017. Virg was a great friend with a wonderful sense of humour. She was a talented figure skater and a classically-trained pianist who could play pop songs by ear. But most significantly, she cared about others. She volunteered throughout high school and well into her 20s at the Bloorview Children’s Hospital (now Holland Bloorview), determined to make a difference to the children who lived and attended school there. Her dream was to become a registered nurse, though this was not to be; she faced many challenges in her own life, including the early death of her father and, starting in her early twenties, difficult mental health issues. Her death had a profound impact on those who knew her – it was heartbreaking to learn that she had been homeless for two decades, but also inspiring, because Virg found, and shared, great joy in spite of her challenges.

From Virginia’s friend Paul

“I am devastated by the news of the death of Virginia. We were good friends in the 80’s to the early 90’s. We worked together in aquatics and attended the same university campus. We worked on a university publication together and often met up on campus. She was a beautiful human being, always putting on a happy face everywhere.  But yes, deep inside I knew there was much more going on. Our conversations were effortless- we knew each other very well and could often communicate without a word being spoken.

To hear that she died at such an early age is sad to hear; to find out she had been homeless for many years is shocking to me.  We lost touch in the early 90’s and shortly thereafter I moved out of the province.  I have many wonderful memories of Virgie and thinking back to them I find  myself ‘tearing up’. I remember once us deciding on the spur of the moment one Saturday to  bike down to Toronto’s Ferry Terminal, where we sailed to Centre Island.  We biked around the island and eventually headed back up north when the weather turned for the worse. Then we hopped in my car and went to the movie The World according to Garp with Robin Williams.

I would have given anything to have been able to comfort her in her last days. I’m amazed by her resolve to continue on in such trying circumstances.  I can only imagine how painful it was for her as an only child to lose both parents while still young.  And yet she found a reason to continue on-amazing. Virgie was a special person- one of those rare occurrences where a human being shines in their creation.  She WAS noticed and WAS loved.  I will never forget her and the wonderful times we experienced together”

1989 May 30 – Daniel “Danny” Oram

(from Daniels son Sean Oram)

“Danny was born in New Brunswick on August 8, 1944.

He was a brilliant man, working for McDonnall Douglas Aircraft in Malton.  Alcohol got the best of him breaking up a marriage, soon after he distanced himself from the family.  We had very limited contact with him through the years of him being on the street, often in and out of rooming homes on the George St., Pembroke St. and Seaton St. area.  I believe he Visited the Scott Mission and Seaton House from time to time.

When we were contacted by St. Michael’s Hospital he was suffering from T.B. and liver cirrhosis.  He was admitted into West Park T.B. Centre on Buttonwood Ave.  It was during this time that my mother and I offered to help him as best we could.  It also gave me a chance to know my father (I was 16) and gave him a chance to know me.  Even though we didn’t know each-other all that well, he taught me and my friends some of our most valuable life lessons.  What life was like as an alcoholic on the streets of Toronto, how to never allow a “vice” to take control and empathy for those on the street.

Unfortunately the “power of the bottle” had a stronger hold on him than anything we could provide.  He checked himself out of the hospital and was back on the streets.  He was picked up again a couple of weeks later and died shortly thereafter.

The short time we had with him inspired my mother (Julie (Oram) Dimytruk), a soldier with the Salvation Army, and I to work with the homeless out of a Salvation Army facility on Victoria.  I think it was called “The Friendship Room”
